Dropshipping is a Viable Business Plan During Economic Turbulence

There is no doubt that the economy has hit a rough patch. But don’t let that stop you from starting your own online business. There are several advantages to becoming a dropshipper during this period.

The primary advantage is that it doesn’t cost much. Online retailers dropship mostly because it is cheaper than having inventory on hand. The retailer does not have to pay for the storage space, the product, or the employees to manage orders and fulfillment. For a minimal monthly fee a supplier that offers a dropship service will do all of that for the retailer.

Another advantage of utilizing a dropship service during these challenging economic times is that the upfront cost is minimal. As mentioned earlier the retailer does not have to purchase the product from the manufacturer and the retailer does not have to store it. The dropship service pays that cost. The retailer simply pays the fee required by the dropshipper.

Finally, if the retailer decides dropshipping is not for them then they have not lost much. As it is the dropship service that purchases the products and the storage space, the retailer is only responsible for paying the minimal access fee. If the retailer decides to discontinue their dropship business then they lose only the access fee, and not the cost of buying products and storage space (which would probably cost the retailer tens of thousands of dollars).

Starting a business today can be a scary prospect. But being a dropshipper is a viable business strategy that will survive this economic climate.

I would be careful when it comes to drop shipping. Yes, it is easy to get started but it is very tough to profit. Drop shipping is not wholesale and deals in very slim profit margins. When you are a large retailer and deal in huge volume then drop shipping is a nice supplement to your in-house inventory. However, if you are a small business hoping to start with a few sales a day it is going to be hard to make it work.

Also, if the dropshipper messes up — your customers will come to YOU to solve their problem. You become a middleman between the drop ship company and the buyer. This can be a real pain!

    Chris,

I totally agree with you on that.
We have been drop shipping for years now and have had to deal with just about every kind of issue known to man.

I make a decent living doing it but will NEVER get rich doing so.
It is a great way for people to make a few extra bucks, but I do not recommend anyone trying to do this full time.
